Let the Battle Commence

Posted by David Sudworth on April 4, 2007 3:29 PM |

WELCOME to the Advertiser's new blog, The Battle for West Lancashire.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be giving you all the latest news and analysis for the impending May 3 elections.

And on the night, we'll be at the count at Ormskirk Civic Hall giving you the results on this blog as it happens.

Usually, we publish the results in the paper, but because we hit the streets on a Thursday the results are a week old. But with new technology, there's no need for that anymore.

So with one month to go before polling day, let the battle and debate commence...

Sounds like an interesting blog. I'll keep an eye on it. Will we have any Communist Party candidates???

Sniper, I'm not too sure as the official candidate list hasn't been released yet.
However, there's certainly not been any Communist Party candidates in West Lancs for a long time and if there is a local branch they've been keeping a low profile.
There was a Socialist Alliance candidate, Lyndsey Shipstone, who stood in Ashurst Ward in 2002 but since then there hasn't been party on the far left of Labour to contest a seat.

One thing that baffles me is the traditional reluctance of so-called middle of the road candidates to stand in West Lancs. It's always either Labour (Skem) or Tories (elsewhere) with nothing in between. So, David, perhaps you could cast your expert opinion on why the Lib Dems are seemingly so frightened of West Lancs??? They've had great success in neighbouring Sefton and even in Liverpool. How did they get on in the general election here?

I was at the Civic Hall for the General Election and the Lib Dem candidate left before midnight. Everyone else was there until 4am whether they liked it or not. Even David Braid on his anti gay ticket. Our Lib Dem obviously saw the way the wind was blowing but it showed a real lack of gumption to disappear like a guff in the wind. I wasted my vote on him.

David, this blog is a great idea - well done to the Addy for setting this site up. I hope that it generates a lot of debate in the run up to the elections.

However, I must disagree with the sniper's comments - particularly with his apparent analysis that Lib Dems are "middle of the road". From my experience in other constituencies they're anything but... usually further to the right than the Tories (but that was Twickenham). That said, it'll be interesting to see how the candidates do in North Meols and Tarleton.
